Four deadly viruses could ruin UK’s Christmas – from 100 day cough to China pneumonia

Written by on December 9, 2023

Christmas is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year – but this year’s festivities might be destroyed thanks to four major viruses sweeping the globe.

From the latest Coronavirus strain to the mysterious pneumonia-like virus sweeping China, the Daily Star will be your science guides. We have put together this handy guide of each of the four main viruses, and just how bad the symptoms are for each one, especially as three of the four are known to cause fatalities in the most extreme cases.

No deaths have yet been reported from the virus, however the Daily Star was told earlier this week that it does have eight symptoms, which are:

  • A very high temperature
  • Sweating and shivering
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Sharp, stabbing chest pain
  • Quick, shallow breaths
  • Breathlessness at rest
  • A dry, irritable cough
  • Delirium or confusion

Winter flu

It comes around ever year, yet it never gets any easier to cope with. Winter flu will likely see the UK’s hospitals filled with coughing and spluttering sick people – while many will try to brave it out in bed.

Although there is a flu vaccine, many will still contract the flu and end up feeling sorry for themselves either way.

According to the NHS, the official flu symptoms are:

  • A sudden high temperature of 38°C or above
  • An aching body
  • Feeling tired or exhausted
  • A dry cough
  • A sore throat
  • A headache
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea or tummy pain
  • Feeling sick and being sick

Whooping cough or 100-day cough

Earlier this week, the Daily Star revealed experts were panicking about whooping cough, which has seen a 250% increase in cases in recent weeks. The number of people suffering from the bacterial infection, also known as pertussis, is now triple that of last year. Over the past five months, 716 cases have been reported to health authorities.
