The foundation of King David Umahi University of Medical Sciences in Ebonyi State has been approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The institution, which is located in Uburu, Ohoazara Local Government Area of the state, raises the total number of universities in the country to 197, according to NUC Executive Secretary Prof Abubakar Rasheed, who handed the clearance letter to Governor David Umahi on Tuesday in Abuja.
Rasheed praised the governor for moving through with the establishment of the university, noting that the specialized university, which may serve a population of no more than 5,000 students, can compete well with any university in the world.
The NUC president stated that a university’s quality or contribution is determined not by the number of students enrolled, but by the quality and usefulness of its programs to the immediate area, the country, and mankind.
Governor Umahi explained that the goal of establishing a medical university is to create a world-class medical center that can compete with any other university or medical center in the world.
The governor thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for allocating N3.5 billion to the institution for the building of a cancer facility.
“The institution was founded with a vision and objectives that are in line with the Nigerian National Health Policy (NHP) and Strategy, which aims to achieve excellent health for all Nigerians,” he added.
Meanwhile, the institution stated in a statement released on Tuesday that its main objective is to produce specialized people in the most favorable environment in all aspects of medical specialties while maintaining the greatest level of professionalism, ethics, and quality.
It is “programmed to meet the manpower needs to address the challenge of human resources for health in line with new global realities and trends that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emerging health issues, particularly with respect to global health challenges (e.g., the Covid-19 pandemic),” according to the statement.
Medicine and Surgery, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Health Policy and Health Systems, Hospital Administration, and Dentistry are among the subjects offered at the university, according to the report.
